So, that is exactly the fool's folly that I’ve set out to do over the weekend: shrink my Windows partition and dual boot a Linux distribution, with a challenge to limit needing to reboot back into Windows.
Blender
Easy, since it already runs everywhere
Visual Studio Code (again, easy, since it’s already cross platform)
With SSH and easier scripting support, it’s arguably better on Linux anyway.
My usual offline “prototype editor” (used for small sites or really quick builds for clients) runs as a proton environment, so should be relatively easy to shift
GameMaker is essential for my teaching job (does it run on Wine?)
Unreal development is probably a bust, but I was looking for a lighter engine for my current project anyway (and a shift in focus in development is on-hand anyway – so might not even be an issue)
Office (mostly) runs in a browser if needed, but I’m perfectly fine with LibreOffice and to drop the Office subscriptions.
Side note: my Wife has recently dropped Windows in favor of a MacBook since her perfectly fine Omen gaming machine was also left behind and she didn’t how overbearing the Windows 11 machine she uses for work has been.
Outlook was preferred, but the newer versions have less focus on being able to manage multiple accounts with ease and is slow enough that Microsoft now has Outlook New and Outlook Classic.
Shockingly, these both now have a heavy emphasis in running everything through Microsoft tooling and are no longer presented as a means to connect to whatever setup your business has like they once were.
Thunderbird is probably fine, but it’s been a while since I’ve used it, but could potentially look at alternatives like emClient (does it have a Linux version) or even worst case scenario: webmail.
School uses Teams, how will I cope without my copies of Teams New, Teams New New and Teams Classic all competing for attention
(spoiler: I only ever use Teams in a browser anyway)
We also use Discord, but again, I mostly just login via browser.
Google Meet is fine in browser and who uses Zoom anymore anyway?
This is the one that is concerning the most: I actively use the Adobe suite and don’t anticipate good results using these monolithic beasts via Wine. Fortunately, I’m hearing good things about Affinity (which does run fine via Wine) and Davinci Resolve has been an industry beast that I’ve been wanting to try out for a while now.
Other business
I have a few clients that I need to RDP into occasionally and need to access file shares via VPN for. I also reluctantly use Spotify while working since it’s the only thing that has survived two alternative service shutdowns. Worst case: browser mode.
